What Do Thomas Edison, Meriwether Lewis and
Ben Franklin Have in Common?

The Bible tells us that all men are created in God’s image. As creator, God exercises care and superintendence over his creatures, a doctrine we call providence. Each of the men listed above played a pivotal role in our history, and we will study each in depth and on location in the coming months. Looking beyond the impressive résumés each left behind, we will examine each through the lens of Scripture to gain understanding where they fit and what role they played in God’s plan that shaped our nation and indeed our lives.

Thomas Edison

The history of science and invention rarely take their place among the most visited historic sites. The home of inventor Thomas Edison is an exception. Though his workshop was uprooted and transported to Michigan, his home remains in Milan, the birthplace of this great American genius and the location of his early education and formative years. Edison’s home is just one of the stops on our Shores of Lake Erie Tour that includes the Oliver Hazard Perry Memorial on Put In Bay, the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Home, and Johnson’s Island Confederate Cemetery.

Meriwether Lewis

Meriwether Lewis was an explorer, soldier, politician and naturalist. Chosen by Thomas Jefferson to explore the new Louisiana Purchase, Lewis recruited William Clark to share command of the expedition. We will visit the starting point for the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the site of a powerful interpretation and representation of the expedition. We will look deeply into the most important voyage of discovery in the history of the continent and discuss the meaning of dominion.

Benjamin Franklin

“I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth — that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the Ground without his Notice, is it probable that an Empire can rise without his Aid?” Benjamin Franklin uttered these words to his beleaguered colleagues at the Constitutional Convention. Come with us and stand in that very room where our founding Fathers forged the documents of liberty in Philadelphia as we celebrate independence this July!
