Lessons from Florida — Looking to Nashville

Dear friends,

This past weekend, history lovers from 22 different families, some spanning 3 generations, gathered in St. Augustine, Florida for our sold-out Pirates, Presidents, Conquistadors and More! Tour. Amidst sunny skies and ocean breezes, we visited the oldest masonry fort in the U.S.A. — Castillo de San Marcos, as well as the Huguenot settlement in Jacksonville, the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park and the largest Pirate Museum in the country. We concluded at Olustee, where we watched the reenactment of the largest Civil War battle in Florida.

Immersed in captivating accounts by historian Bill Potter, old friendships were deepened and new ones were forged. Friday evening we had two special treats as a dear family provided dinner for the group and Col. John Eidsmoe surprised us with a fascinating lecture on the Conquistadors via video chat!

Throughout the weekend, we were instructed and inspired by the stories of extraordinary explorers, brave soldiers, devout settlers and colorful characters while reminded of important truths by Mr. Potter such as when he prepared us for our tour of the Pirate Museum:

“Pirates are one of the most popular kinds of thieves in America, and it’s because of Hollywood.... The truth is that most pirates were cut-throat murderers that lived outside the boundaries of civilization.... We must remember Isaiah 5:20: ‘Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!’”

New Book Inspired by Our 2014 Florida Tour!

“Drawing from the old accounts of pirates and piracy by Captain Charles Johnson, R. A. Sheats tells the stories of the men who chose to live outside the law and suffered the deadly consequences of their sin. Quoting the great Puritan John Flavel, Sheats pulls back the curtain to show that man’s lusts and attempts to live without God’s law lead to death and destruction. Pirates’ failure to learn from the Proverbs have made them a byword for foolishness and folly.” —Bill Potter
