Celebrate Independence in Philadelphia! Scotland Discount Deadline Approaching!

The vision of our Founding Fathers is the vision we need for our children today. Join us starting June 29 and we will visit the very sites where these Christian foundations were laid, telling the remarkable stories of Philadelphia and the men God used to forge our liberties on the anvil of adversity.

The Men of Philadelphia’s Past

In the Providence of God, the king of England gave title of a large tract of land (45,000 square miles) in the colonies to settle a debt with Admiral Penn’s family, and appointed William Penn the sole proprietor of the colony. With the new governor came thousands of persecuted fellow-Quakers from England and the colonies to inhabit the “holy experiment.” The capitol city was named Philadelphia, “brotherly love.” That colony became a haven for persecuted sects and a colonial promised land that enabled the Quaker citizens and others to prosper and to live in peace. The Penn family put their unique stamp on the colony that bore their name. By the 1770s it was the largest city in North America with more than 34,000 souls.

In 1776, representatives from the North American colonies of Great Britain met in Philadelphia in a Congress. From their gathering came the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and eventually, the Constitution of the United States. Centrally located and affording all the amenities of a colonial city, Philadelphia was home to the Continental Congress which attracted the likes of John Adams, John Hancock, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, all of whose destinies were closely linked to that city.

George Washington would fight near Chad’s Ford on the Brandywine River to protect the city on September 11th, 1777. He was a mere few yards from death and ended up losing a closely fought and terrible battle. We will walk that battlefield and tell the stories of the day. We will visit the camps of the Americans at Valley Forge from that unforgettable winter when the bloody footprints of the Patriots could be seen in the snow. Not far from Philadelphia we will visit the site of Washington’s remarkable crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas day to lead the American army to victory over a German force in Trenton. His men would enter Philadelphia one more time, in 1781, on their way to ultimate victory in Yorktown, Virginia.

The city is the home of the singular Benjamin Franklin whose presence is still felt in the places we visit today. His grave lies near signers of the Declaration of Independence and not far from the Liberty Bell and Constitution Hall, all of which we will explore and reminisce. You will learn the names and stories of men you may not know as well as the usual icons of our country, men such as John Witherspoon, the only preacher to sign the Declaration, and the amazing Dr. Benjamin Rush and Charles Carroll of Carrollton, the longest lived of all the signers.

We will spend some time at the splendid Brandywine River Museum, showcase of three generations of American artists, the Wyeths. Also displayed here is the art of Howard Pyle, whose patriotic subjects also adorn the pages and covers of many beautifully illustrated historic books. All in all, there is no other city in the United States that can lay claim to more important sites related to American independence, nor evoke more important messages of sacrifice, heroism, law, and Constitutional principles to our families in this generation.
