Texas and Tennessee

Thanks Tennessee!

Davy Crockett (1786-1836)

It’s likely you have heard the saying, “everything’s bigger in Texas.” And while there’s some truth to that boast, Texas should thank Tennessee for building much of that reputation. Remember the Alamo? Before Davy Crockett headed west and met his demise in heroic fashion holding off the army of Gen. Santa Anna, the frontiersman was a Tennessee legislator and U.S. congressman. Sam Houston was raised near Maryville, Tennessee, and is the only person in American history to be governor of two states, Tennessee and Texas. After Houston defeated Gen. Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto, he was voted president of what became the Republic of Texas. James K. Polk, former governor of Tennessee, became President of the United States in 1844, promising to annex Texas, which he did after winning the Mexican-American war.
