Step Forward in the Spirit of 1776!
t the very end of 1776, as the American cause hung by a thread, a ragtag army of farmers, tradesmen, and fathers faced a choice that would decide the fate of our nation. They had been terribly beaten in New York, harried in retreat across New Jersey’s open farmland, and were cold, starving, unpaid, with their enlistments about to expire.
They could return to civilian life, tend to neglected crops, provide protection for their vulnerable families. The recent blessing of a surprise victory at Trenton lulled many into thinking their duty done.
Under these circumstances, General Washington, drew up his veteran troops along the Delaware River where they had accomplished their most extraordinary effort the week before, and made an impassioned appeal to his brave Continental Army to stay with him, into the new year. Those willing to stay were asked to step forward. Drums rolled, but no one moved. Minutes passed. Then Washington wheeled his horse about and spoke again.

“My brave fellows, you have done all I asked you to do, and more than could be reasonably expected, but your country is at stake, your wives, your houses, and all that you hold dear. You have worn yourselves out with fatigues and hardships, but we know not how to spare you. If you will consent to stay even one month longer, you will render that service to the cause of liberty and to your country, which you can probably never do under any other circumstances.”
Again, the drums sounded and this time the men began stepping forward. “God Almighty,” recounted General Nathanael Greene who witnessed the scene, “inclined their hearts to listen to the proposal and they engaged anew.” These valiant, ordinary men exemplified the spirit of the War for Independence. Reignite this same spirit inside of you and your children on our Philadelphia tour—standing where our patriots stood and paying homage to where they fell. Dr. Bill Potter and Landmark Events would be honored to have you, and your family join us as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
