From its outset, those who founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony and its capital of Boston, were purposefully driven by the things of God. Established by heroes of religious liberty, motivated by their experience of persecution to leave their prosperous lives in England and plant themselves in the New World, they were, in the words of Cotton Mather, “a people of God, settled in those which were once the Devil’s territories.”
