he largest recorded departure from the Old World to any destination occurred between 1632 and 1640, when nearly 20,000 English Puritans crossed the seas to settle New England. This first religious settlement of its kind in the New World was poetically composed of Religious Dissenters—men and women too loyal to the common law to rebel at home. So, they made their home in the untried wilderness of the Americas, hoping to carve out a bountiful future for their descendants without compromise or regulation.

When such liberties were infringed upon, an inherently American reaction arose—bred from the hard lessons learned by those who first risked everything to plant this settlement. Committed to guarding her prosperity jealously and preserving her existence as a luminous guardian of freedom, the sons of Massachusetts’ Puritan founders took up arms to bleed and die for her.
