Freedom Fighters from Our Past

Allow us to introduce you to some of the courageous characters highlighted on our Resist Tyranny Tour this fall. Their remarkable actions and accounts many years ago nurtured our contemporary freedoms and provide vital inspiration and instruction for patriots today.

When King George first heard of the brewing American revolution, he dubbed it a “Presbyterian parson’s rebellion.” He had the right take on things as the influence of the pulpit on the mindset of the American colonists leading up to the war was immeasurable.

One such influence was General Peter Muhlenberg, a minister of the Gospel who, when war between Britain and America broke out, was commissioned as a colonel by his friend and commander George Washington, and instructed by him to raise a regiment for the Continental Army and join him in the beleaguered north.

Muhlenberg’s last sermon to his congregation before he departed was from the book of Ecclesiastes, and his final words to them were “In the language of the Holy Writ, there is a time for all things. There is a time to preach and a time to fight. And now is the time to fight.”

The next day found Pastor Muhlenberg leading 300 members of his church to join General Washington’s Continental Army as the 8th Virginia Regiment. He would remain in combat until the culminating battle of Yorktown, ascending to the rank of Major General.

Three facets of the Peter Muhlenberg Memorial show the roles he played in contribution to his country: Clergyman, Soldier, Statesman

Our founders were statesman, not politicians. They were men of multiple vocations who considered it their responsibility to be engaged in the civil sphere. There was no limitation against a minister going into the House of Burgesses, or later shedding blood in preservation of liberty. The role of a Christian is comprehensive, and no man displayed such a willingness to press the crown rights of Christ in all spheres as Peter Muhlenberg.

Join us this fall at Peter Muhlenberg’s Courthouse, just one of the great stops on our Resist Tyranny Tour, October 18-22!
