rom the American Revolution to the Civil War and into the twentieth century, Georgia has produced leaders who helped shape the course of the nation. Join Dr. Bill Potter and Timothy Reed for a two-day exploration of Augusta, Washington, and Crawfordville as we examine the lives, convictions, achievements, and failures of some of Georgia’s most consequential figures. We will visit the homes of Declaration signer George Walton, Confederate leaders Robert Toombs and Alexander Stephens, and President Woodrow Wilson, discovering how family, faith, education, and ambition influenced each man. At Augusta’s Signers Monument, we will honor Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration, while at Kettle Creek Battlefield we will walk the ground where Patriot militiamen secured a vital victory over Loyalist forces. This tour also marks an exciting milestone for Landmark Events as Timothy, a longtime participant in our Future of History Symposiums, joins Dr. Potter in an expanded guiding role—putting the next generation of providential historians into the field.

Friday, February 5
- An all-important battle in the heart of Georgia, the battle of Kettle Creek saw patriot and loyalist forces clash on February 14th of 1779, with the patriots securing a major victory. Now affiliated with the National Park Service, this battlefield is well kept and easy to access.
- The Robert Toombs House, located at the heart of Washington, GA, is the well-preserved home of Legislator, General, and Confederate Treasury Secretary Robert Toombs. Toombs, a lively and bombastic character, shaped the history of Georgia, the United States, and the Confederate States of America in more ways than one.
- Alexander Stephens, lawyer, leader, and legislator, was a central figure in American politics during the 1850s, and an even larger player in the formation of the Confederate States of America. , including his full library, is preserved, and offers a telling glimpse into his personal life and story.
- Following our time at A. H. Stephen’s house, we are planning a special family fellowship meal at a local BBQ legend, Heavy’s, just 15 minutes down the road, an opportunity for food, conversation, and reflection on the experiences we’ve shared together.
Saturday, February 6
- Woodrow Wilson, America’s 28th president, the President of Princeton University, and one of the most controversial figures in the 20th century political arena. But Wilson’s roots originate down south, with a Presbyterian father and a religious upbringing. We will visit Wilson’s boyhood home, preserved and complete with several original artifacts.
- Meadow Garden is the home of George Walton, youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence, two-time governor of Georgia, Senator, and soldier. One of the oldest house museums in Georgia, Meadow Garden walks us through the life of one of early Georgia’s finest.
- Georgia’s three signers of the Declaration, George Walton, Lyman Hall, and Button Gwinnett, are all honored at the Signers Monument in downtown Augusta. A 50-foot granite obelisk, this imposing monument also entombs both Walton and Hall.
- More than 200 years old, Magnolia Cemetery has a host of intriguing and influential figures buried within its gates, including many soldiers from both sides of the Civil War and seven Confederate generals. We will visit the grave of E. P. Alexander, Confederate chief of artillery for James Longstreet.
- One of the oldest churches in Georgia, St. Paul’s Church has an almost 300-year history, and holds a colonial cannon believed to be used by General James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia. Here we will briefly touch on the origins of Georgia and the history of Augusta.

Dr. Bill Potter
An experienced historian and avid bibliophile, Dr. Bill Potter combines a lifelong study of American history with an uncommon ability to captivate audiences of all ages as he traces the providential acts of God throughout the ages. He has taught history in high schools and colleges, has led many tours of American and European historical sites and brings to each event a wealth of experience and knowledge. An experienced researcher and writer, Dr. Potter possesses a practical knowledge of antiquarian books, documents, and artifacts and has published several short books and has penned many articles and book reviews for publication. Dr. Potter has earned a well-deserved reputation as a man gifted in communicating the story of God’s providential hand in American history. As a father of eight children, he appreciates the necessity of passing on to the succeeding generations the richness of both our regional and national history. He and his wife, Leslie, reside in Virginia.
Timothy Reed
Timothy Reed is a homeschool graduate, avid researcher, aspiring journalist, and a budding historian, with a heart for God and His Word. From a young age, Timothy has worked to learn, expound on, and share the truth with those whom he comes into contact with. He has worked for Agenda Weekly, Landmark Events, and The Worldview In 5 Minutes, as well as participated in the National Bible Bee, where he still serves in a volunteer capacity.
