ennessee hillbilly and devout Christian, Alvin York illustrates the tension and sometimes the dilemma existing for some Christians, between the Sixth Commandment and killing in war. Sgt. York wanted nothing more than to obey the biblical truths concerning fighting for one’s nation and loyalty to Christ. In the end he served honorably in the First World War and came away as the most highly decorated American soldier. He devoted the rest of his life to Christian education, hospitality, and promoting the Gospel of Christ.
